You ask

In DKA the serum potassium was 5.6, but I’m told total body potassium is low. Why?

The tutor

Think of potassium as living mostly inside cells, with insulin helping to keep it there. In DKA there is no insulin, and the very high glucose draws water, and potassium with it, out of cells. So the blood level looks high while the body is already losing potassium through the extra urine. Serum shows where the potassium is, not how much there is.

USMLE Step 1

Make the science make sense.

Understanding how a mechanism works helps you apply it when a question presents it differently.

Use the tutor to connect the science to the case—from physiology and pathology to the effects of a drug.

  1. Start where you need to. Revisit a foundation or explore a difficult detail.

  2. Ask a follow-up. Work through the part that still isn’t clear.

  3. Put it into practice. Apply the concept with questions from the bank.

USMLE Step 2 CK

Work through the clinical decision.

Two answers can seem reasonable. The important detail is often what makes one fit the case better.

Explore that difference with the tutor. Compare diagnoses, discuss an investigation or work through the next step in management.

  1. Identify the relevant clues. Explore how the findings fit together.

  2. Compare the options. Understand why one answer fits and another falls short.

  3. Take the lesson forward. Keep a useful takeaway and choose what to practise next.
